বাংলা সাহিত্যের ইতিহাসে মহাকাব্য ধারার সুত্রপাত করেন মাইকেল মধুসুদন দত্ত। ১৮৬১সালে প্রকাশিত ‘মেঘনাদবধ’ কাব্যের মাধ্যমে মহাকাব্যের পূর্ণাঙ্গরুপের অনবদ্য প্রকাশ ঘটে এবং বাংলা সাহিত্যে তা প্রথম শ্রেষ্ঠ ও সার্থক মহাকাব্য হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পায়।
