Justice is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth is of systems of thought. A theory however elegant and economical must be rejected or revised if it is untrue; likewise laws and institutions no matter how efficient and will arranged must be reformed or abolished if they are unjust. Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override. For this reason justice denies that the loss of freedom for some is made right by a greater good shared by others. It does not allow that the sacrifices imposed on a few are outweighed by the larger sum of advantages enjoyed by many. Therefore, in a just society the liberties of equal citizenship are taken as settled; the rights secured by justice are not subject to political bargaining o to the calculus of social interests. The only thing that permits us to acquiesce in an erroneous theory is the lack of a better one; analogously, an injustice is tolerable only when it is necessary to avoid an even greater injustice. Being first virtuous of human activities, truth and justice are uncompromising.
(Translate into Bangla)সত্য যেমন চিন্তাশক্তির প্রথম তন্ত্র তেমনি ন্যায়পরায়ণতা সামাজিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রথম গুণ । রাষ্ট্রীয় আইন এবং প্রতিষ্ঠান যত দক্ষ এবং সুসমন্বিত হোক তা যদি অন্যায্য হয় সেটা যেমন করে সংস্কার বা বিলুপ্ত করতে হয়, ঠিক তেমনি কোনো তত্ত্ব যত রুচিশীল আর মিতব্যয়ী হোক না কেন, তা যদি অসত্য হয় তবে তা অবশ্যই বাতিল করতে হবে বা তাকে সংশোধন করতে হবে। প্রত্যেকটা মানুষই কিছু অলঙ্ঘনীয় ন্যায়পরায়ণতার উপর প্রতিষ্ঠিত যার দ্বারা এমনকি সমগ্র সমাজের কল্যাণের বিষয়টিও অগ্রাহ্য করা যায় না। এজন্যই কিছু মানুষের স্বাধীনতা হরণ করে বেশি সংখ্যক মানুষের অধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠার ব্যাপারটি ন্যায়পরায়ণতার সাথে যায় না। ন্যায়পরায়ণতা এটা মেনে নেয় না যে অধিক সংখ্যক মানুষের সুবিধা ভোগ কিছু সংখ্যক মানুষের উপর আরোপিত আত্মত্যাগের চেয়ে গুরুত্বে ছাড়িয়ে যাবে। এই কারণেই একটি ন্যায়পরায়ণ সমাজে সম নাগরিকত্বের অধিকারের বিষয়টি পরিবর্তনহীন বিষয়। তাই আইন দ্বারা যে অধিকারের প্রতিষ্ঠা হয়েছে তা রাজনৈতিক দরকষাকষির হাতিয়ার নয় কিংবা এটা কোনো সমাজের আগ্রহের হিসেবের বিষয় নয়। ভ্রান্ত তত্ত্ব বিনা বিচারে মেনে নেয়ার জন্য যে জিনিসটি কাজ করে তা হলো ভালো কোনো তত্ত্বের অপ্রাচুর্যতা। অনুরূপভাবে একটি অন্যায় তখনই সহনীয় হয়ে উঠে কেবলমাত্র যখন এরচেয়ে বড় কোনো অন্যায় এড়িয়ে চলার সুযোগ থাকে। মানবের গুণাবলীর মধ্যে প্রথম হওয়ার কারণে এই সত্য ও ন্যায়পরায়ণতার ব্যাপারে আপোসহীন হতে হবে।
