The Dog and his Shadow

One day a hungry dog was searching for food. He came across a butcher's shop. When the butcher was little unmindful he stole a big piece of meat and ran away to enjoy it in solitude. On his way back he had to cross a bridge over a stream.
While crossing the bridge the dog looked down and saw his reflection in water. But the greedy and dull-headed dog took the shadow as another dog with another big piece of meat in his mouth. The dog thought, "If I get that piece, I will have a great feast."
To make another dog afraid, he barked at it. But alas! his own piece of meat fell into the water as soon as he opened his mouth. The dog stood there for a while and went away.

A Bitter Experience

Once, in the month of Srabon, I was coming to Dhaka from Barishal by a launch. At that time the river was full to the brim. At the beginning of the journey the sky was clear and the river was calm. The launch was moving smoothly. I as well as other passengers were enjoying the journey. In the evening the launch passed Munshiganj district and entered the Padma. Then the weather was getting dark. The sky was covered with dark cloud. The wind began to blow bitterly. But our launch was moving as usual. At 1.00 o'clock at night, the launch was to cross the river Padma to touch Chandpur Launch Terminal. But the crew did not care about the rough weather. They started to cross the river.
After half an hour, when the launch was at the middle of the river, the weather took a serious turn. The wind began to blow so violently that the launch was about to overturn. It was swinging bitterly. The passengers in the launch were shouting in fear. Some were praying to Allah to overcome the danger. I also got so worried that I bade my mother good-bye forever over phone. My mother burst into teers hearing the danger I was undergoing. At last the weather became calm and we reached Chandpur station safely. I will never forget such a bitter launch journey.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

A long time ago, the town of Hamelin in Germany Germany was faced with a great problem. It became full of rats. The rats were so big and fierce that they fought the dogs, killed the cat and bit the babies in the cradles. They ate the corn in the granaries. They ran about shrinking and squealing all the time.
At last the people came to the Town Hall and said to the Mayor, "Do something about the rats or we will send you packing." The Mayor trembled. He called a meeting of his councilors and talked about the problem for hours. But they could not find a way out. They were in despair. At that moment a pied piper came and went up to the council table and said, "People call me pied piper. If you pay me a thousand guilders, I will rid your town of rats." "All right," said the Mayor. "We'll pay you a thousand guilders. When will you set to work?" "Now," replied the pied piper.
The pied piper went to the street, drew out a pipe from his pocket and began to play on pipe. Soon from every house in Hamelin came out the rats tumbling. There were hundreds and thousands of them that followed him. He went down to the bank of the river Weser and waded into the river. And every single rat, whith followed him, was drowned. But the Mayor refused to pay the contracted amount of money. At this the pied piper got angry and played on his pipe a different tune. Hearing the strange tune the children came out of their houses dancing and followed him. The pied piper disappeared behind a hill with all the children and did never come back.
