Zainul Abedin was Bangladeshi painter who had an extraordinary talent and was internationally recognized for his paintings.

He became well known for his scries of paintings on Bengal Famine which was made by man during British Colonial rule in 1944.

Zainul Abedin was a pioneer of the modern art movement and he was considered as the founding father of Bangladeshi modern arts.

He spent most of his childhood near the scenic banks of the Brahmaputra river. It inspired him from his early life and later appeared in many of his paintings. Actually it was a great source of inspiration throughout his carcer.

He first came under spotlight after getting the Governor's Gold Medal in All India Exhibition in 1938.. It gave him confidence to create his own visual style.

He got admitted to the Government School of Art in Calcutta which is now known as Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, India. There he learned European academic style for five years.

He paid tribute to the Brahmaputra by drawing a series of water colour paintings in this regard which helped him earn Governor's Gold Medal in All India Exhibition.

His role was significant in the art movement in Bangladesh. He was the founding Principal of the Government Institute of Arts at University of Dhaka which later became the Faculty of Fine Arts.

When he became dissatisfied of oriental style and saw the limitations of European academic style, then he got attracted to realism.

The new style which he started was called 'Bengali Style'. Later he found out that it was not perfect as it had limitations.

He got the title of 'Shilpacharya' which means the great teacher of art. He got this honour from his native country for his artistic and visionary qualities.

He finally went back to nature, rural life and the everyday struggles of men to make his art realistic but modern in appearance.

The series of paintings which he made on the great man-made famine in Bengal are considered his most characteristic works.

He achieved First Class with distinction from Calcutta Art School and was the first Muslim student to do so. Later he joined the faculty after his graduation.
