Lord Buddha and the Mother
One day Lord Buddha was sitting among his disciples. A poor woman came crying to him. She had her dead child in her lap. She pleaded to the holy man to make his son alive. Buddha was moved with pity at the great sorrow of the woman. He told the woman, "Mother, there is only one medicine to bring back your son's life."
"What's that, my Lord?" asked the woman eagerly.
"If you can bring a handful of mustard seeds from a house where death has never entered, I shall restore your son's life," assured the holy man.
The lady moved from door to door for the mustard seeds. But everywhere she received disappointment. One or the other inmates had died in every house.
In the evening she came back to Lord Buddha with a heavy heart. Then Lord Buddha consoled her saying, "You should not brood over your own loss as death is the common lot of all."
Moral: Man is mortal.
