ইংরেজি Depreciation শব্দের আভিধানিক অর্থ হলো অবচয় বা মূল্যহ্রাস। ব্যবহারজনিত ক্ষয়ক্ষতি ছাড়াও সময় অতিবাহিত, সরাসরি সম্ভোগ, দুর্ঘটনাজনিত মূল্যহ্রাস, অপ্রচলন বা অকেজো হয়ে যাওয়া ইত্যাদি কারণে সম্পত্তির গুণগত ও পরিমাণগত যে নিয়মিত বা অবিরাম ক্ষয় বা মূল্যহ্রাস ঘটে, তাকে অবচয় বলে।
