Verbal Phrase

কোনো শব্দগুচ্ছ যদি verb-এর মতো কাজ করে তবে তাকে Verbal phrase বলে ।

যেমন—

Do not look down upon the poor.
We look for the brilliant students.

Verbal Phrase হলো এমন একগুচ্ছ শব্দ যা কোনো Verbal (যেমন: Infinitive, Gerund বা Participle) এবং তার সাথে সম্পর্কিত অন্যান্য শব্দ (Object বা Modifier) নিয়ে গঠিত হয়। এটি বাক্যে Verb-এর মতো কাজ না করে বরং Noun, Adjective বা Adverb হিসেবে কাজ করে।

প্রধানত তিন ধরণের Verbal Phrase রয়েছে:

১. Infinitive Phrase:

এটি to + base verb দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং বাক্যে Noun, Adjective অথবা Adverb হিসেবে কাজ করতে পারে।

• গঠন: To + Verb + Object/Modifier

• উদাহরণ: To read books is a good habit. (এখানে 'To read books' একটি Noun হিসেবে কাজ করছে)।

• উদাহরণ: He wants to buy a new car.

২. Gerund Phrase:

এটি Verb + ing দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং বাক্যে সর্বদা একটি Noun হিসেবে কাজ করে। এটি বাক্যের Subject বা Object হতে পারে।

• গঠন: Verb-ing + Object/Modifier

• উদাহরণ: Swimming in the river is good for health. (এখানে 'Swimming in the river' বাক্যের Subject)।

• উদাহরণ: I enjoy listening to music. (এখানে এটি Object হিসেবে কাজ করছে)।

৩. Participle Phrase:

এটি Present Participle (Verb-ing) বা Past Participle (Verb-ed/v3) দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং বাক্যে Adjective হিসেবে কাজ করে। অর্থাৎ এটি কোনো Noun বা Pronoun-কে বর্ণনা করে।

• গঠন: Participle + Object/Modifier

• উদাহরণ: The man sitting in the corner is my uncle. (এখানে 'sitting in the corner' অংশটি 'man'-কে বিশেষায়িত করছে)।

• উদাহরণ: Driven by hunger, the boy stole a loaf of bread. (এখানে 'Driven by hunger' অংশটি 'boy' সম্পর্কে তথ্য দিচ্ছে)।
