Vrigeminal neuralgia as sudden, severe, sharp, stabbing/lancinating, paroxysmal pain affecting one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve. The attacks are usually unilateral and intermittent, lasting seconds to a few minutes, with pain-free intervals. Conventional analgesics often provide little benefit.

The mandibular (V3) and maxillary (V2) divisions are commonly involved. Thus, given "sharp, lancinating intermittent pain on the left side of the face," neuralgia is the characteristic diagnosis.
