The telephone is extension of his voice; the telescope and microscope extensions of his sight; the sword and the plough are the extensions of his arms. In Caesar and Cleopatra, when Bernard Shaw refers to the Library of Alexandria, he says it is mankind's memory. Humanity's vigils have generated infinite pages of infinite books. Mankind owes all that we are to the written word.
