A clause which is used to tell you about the purpose of the verb in the main clause is called adverb clause of purpose.
Adverb clauses of purpose are introduced by the subordinating conjunction that, so that, in order that, in order to and lest. Moreover, these expressions are usually followed by modal auxiliary verbs such as will, can, may, could or might.

• We play well so that we may win.
• Play carefully lest you should lose.
• He gripped his brother’s arm lest he be trampled by the mob.
• We left early in order that guests might reach home before us.
• I learn English in order to increase the standard of living.

Adverbial Clause of Purpose (উদ্দেশ্য নির্দেশক) হলো এমন এক ধরণের Subordinate Clause যা Principal Clause-এ বর্ণিত কোনো কাজের উদ্দেশ্য (Purpose) বা লক্ষ্য প্রকাশ করে। অর্থাৎ, মূল কাজটি কেন বা কী উদ্দেশ্যে করা হচ্ছে, তা এই Clause-টি ব্যাখ্যা করে।

১. সাধারণ কানেক্টর বা সূচক শব্দসমূহ:

এই Clause-গুলো সাধারণত নিচের Subordinating Conjunction-গুলো দিয়ে শুরু হয়:

• So that (যাতে)

• In order that (যাতে / এই উদ্দেশ্যে যে)

• Lest (পাছে ভয় হয় যে / এই ভয়ে যে)

• That (যাতে)

২. গঠনের নিয়ম ও উদাহরণ:

ক) So that / In order that-এর ব্যবহার:

এই দুটি Conjunction-এর ক্ষেত্রে টেন্স অনুযায়ী একটি বিশেষ নিয়ম অনুসরণ করতে হয়। Principal Clause-টি Present Tense-এ থাকলে Subordinate Clause-এ Subject-এর পর can বা may বসে। আর Principal Clause-টি Past Tense-এ থাকলে could বা might বসে।

• উদাহরণ: We eat so that we may live.

• উদাহরণ: He worked hard in order that he could succeed.

খ) Lest-এর ব্যবহার:

এটি নেতিবাচক উদ্দেশ্য বা কোনো কিছু এড়ানোর লক্ষ্য প্রকাশে ব্যবহৃত হয়। Lest যুক্ত বাক্যে সাধারণত Subject-এর পর should বসে এবং মূল Verb-এর Base form ব্যবহৃত হয়। মনে রাখবেন, Lest-এর পরের অংশে 'not' ব্যবহার করার প্রয়োজন হয় না।

• উদাহরণ: Walk fast lest you should miss the train.

• ব্যাখ্যা: দ্রুত হাঁটার উদ্দেশ্য হলো যাতে ট্রেনটি মিস না হয়ে যায়।

৩. চেনার সহজ উপায়:

বাক্যের মূল Verb-টিকে যদি 'কী উদ্দেশ্যে' (For what purpose) দিয়ে প্রশ্ন করা হয়, তবে যে উত্তরটি পাওয়া যাবে সেটিই Adverbial Clause of Purpose।
