The term self-reliance stresses trust in one's own thoughts, skills and originality, and belief in one's own capabilities and genius. It also rejects the need for external support and glorifies the importance of self-application.
Self-help development means development by and for the people. Without a horizontal model and process of development with vertical complementation of necessary means, Bangladesh cannot realize the much needed balanced and equitable social development. Dependence of the population on land has increased more than dependence on other economic sectors, due to a higher rate of population growth in the rural than in the urban sector; a lower rate of growth in land reclamation and the addition of new land to agriculture; and a relatively lower rate of increase in agricultural and industrial productivity than in the population growth rate.
In 1971, Bangladesh had 75 million people and its per capital annual income was $100. In 47 years its population has increased to 160.8 million & per capital income $1752 (According to the data recently published by BBS - 2018). Since 1991, its average annual growth rate has been improving at the rate of 5.4%, Using base year 2005-06, the current GDP growth rate is 7.65%. According to the labor Force Survey 2016, there are 6.35 crore people who are active workers. About 40.6% labor force is directly involved in agricultural sector and reaming 20.4% and 39% workers are engaged in industry and service sector respectively. By the efforts of the unvoiced heroes of our garments sector, Bangladesh has becoming more self-reliant in terms of economy. Though there any some trade deficit, Bangladesh's export earnings reached to 27,451.55 million US dollar (July 2017 - March 2018) and imports reached to 38,715 million US dollar. Thus our economy gets free from depending upon developed countries. But the current 168.8 million population of Bangladesh has a much smaller impact compared to the countries such as Canada, UK, USA whose populations consume and waste, per capital more than 10 times the natural resources by Bangladesh people.
In conclusion we can assume that the reality of self-reliant economy like Bangladesh is far away from the concept of it. Conceptually it is possible for being self-reliant but in the age of force market economy and in the age of modern industrialization, it is some what impossible to be 100% self- reliant. Because the cost of factors of production may be differ from country to country, so the cost of producing any goods in country is less profitable than to import it from other countries. For this, it is not important to be self-reliant economy rather it is important to be more industrialized and service based economy.
