কোনো কোনো Verb-এর পর নির্দিষ্ট কিছু Preposition বা Adverb বসালে উক্ত Verb-এর অর্থের পরিবর্তন ঘটে । Preposition বা Adverb সহ ঐসব Verb-কে Phrasal verbs বা Group verts বলে। যেমন— Bring অর্থ আনয়ন করা কিন্তু Bring up মানে লালন-পালন করা। এখানে Bring up হচ্ছে Phrasal verb বা Group verb.

Phrasal verb (যাকে Group verb-ও বলা হয়) হলো এমন একটি বিশেষ ধরনের verb, যা একটি সাধারণ verb-এর সাথে একটি Preposition অথবা Adverb (বা উভয়ই) যুক্ত হয়ে গঠিত হয়। এই সমন্বয়ের ফলে মূল verb-টির অর্থ সম্পূর্ণ পরিবর্তিত হয়ে একটি নতুন অর্থ প্রকাশ পায়।

১. গঠন (Formation):

Structure: Main verb + Preposition / Adverb.

একই verb-এর সাথে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন Preposition যুক্ত হয়ে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন অর্থ তৈরি করতে পারে।

৩. প্রকারভেদ (Types):

ক) Transitive Phrasal verbs:

এদের অর্থ প্রকাশের জন্য একটি Object-এর প্রয়োজন হয়।

Example: You should give up smoking. ('Smoking' এখানে Object)।

খ) Intransitive Phrasal verbs:

এদের কোনো Object-এর প্রয়োজন হয় না।

Example: The car broke down. (গাড়িটি বিকল হয়ে গেল)।

গ) Separable Phrasal verbs:

কিছু ক্ষেত্রে verb এবং Preposition-এর মাঝখানে Object বসানো যায়।

Example: Turn the light off. (অথবা Turn off the light)।

৪. সচরাচর ব্যবহৃত কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Phrasal verbs:

৫. বাক্য গঠনের ক্ষেত্রে সতর্কতা:

Phrasal verb-এর মূল verb-টি Tense এবং Subject অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হয়, কিন্তু Preposition-টি একই থাকে।

- Past: He looked after his parents.
