Read the passage and answer the questions no. 1, 2 and 3:

Bangladesh is now in the grip of all sorts of pollution like air pollution, soil pollution and water pollution. The dwellers of the urban areas are the worst sufferers of such pollution. The indiscriminate industrialization process in Bangladesh over the past decades has created significant environmental problems. We will now read about some of the most common types of environmental pollutions and ways of coping with them.

Air pollution comes from a wide variety of sources. In Bangladesh poisonous exhausts from industrial plants, brick kilns, old or poorly-serviced vehicles and dust from roads and construction sites are some of the major sources of air pollution. We can minimise this type of pollution by making less use of motor vehicles and avoiding the use of vehicles older than 20 years. We may also use proper lubricants to lessen the level of emission and pollutants. We can encourage people to use CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) or Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) for fuelling their cars. The government may relocate hazardous industries like brick kilns to areas away from human habitation.
Water pollution can occur in oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds and underground reservoirs. As different water sources flow together, the pollution can spread easily and quickly. Causes of water pollution include-increased sediment from soil, erosion, improper waste disposal and littering, leakage of soil pollution into water supplies, organic materials that decay in water supplies.

In fact, polluting the land means polluting the water. Throwing away a toxic substance on the ground near a water source means it eventually reaches the body of water. As a result, the water is polluted. Industrial wastes must not be disposed in rivers or lakes. We need to be more careful about disposing household wastes too. Use of pesticides means that when it rains, chemicals used in the lawn or garden-wash into the water bodies. Therefore, we must be aware of the dangers of using pesticides as they may pollute our rivers, canals and lakes.

Among the most significant causes of soil pollution is the enormous volume of industrial waste which is being produced everyday but not disposed properly. The mismanagement of household wastes, particularly the polythene shopping bags, has caused serious threat to the soil and the drainage system. Another cause for soil pollution is the use of agricultural pesticides, fertilizers, etc. Sometimes fuel leakages from automobiles may get washed away by rain and seep into the nearby soil.

Pesticides and fertilizers are useful for plant growth but their overuse has led to soil pollution. Natural fertilizers and compost can be used instead of their pollution. Recycling papers, plastics and other materials reduces the volume in chemical alternatives. Recycling is another way to reduce and control soil in the topsoil. Planting trees and re-forestation help prevent soil erosion and pollution.

Soil pollution refers to the contamination of soil with harmful substances, leading to a decline in its quality and productivity, and posing risks to human health, plants, and animals.

The main causes of soil pollution include:

  • Industrial Waste: Industries discharge various toxic substances, heavy metals, and chemicals as byproducts. When these wastes are improperly disposed of, they seep into the soil, altering its chemical composition and making it infertile or dangerous.
  •
  • Agricultural Practices: Overuse of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in farming can lead to the accumulation of harmful chemicals in the soil. These substances can destroy beneficial microorganisms, reduce soil fertility, and contaminate groundwater through runoff.
  •
  • Urban and Domestic Waste: Improper disposal of household waste, including plastics, electronic waste, food scraps, and other non-biodegradable materials, contributes significantly to soil pollution. Landfills can leach toxic substances into the surrounding soil as waste decomposes.
  •
  • Deforestation and Soil Erosion: The removal of forests exposes the soil to the elements, leading to erosion. While not a direct pollutant, erosion can carry away nutrient-rich topsoil, degrade land quality, and sometimes spread existing contaminants.
  •
  • Mining Activities: Mining operations disturb large areas of land and can release heavy metals, sulfur compounds, and other toxic chemicals into the soil, severely impacting its structure and fertility.
  •
  • Oil Spills: Accidental spills of oil and petroleum products can saturate the soil, making it toxic and infertile, and posing long-term environmental hazards.

উত্তরঃ Human beings

Human beings are primarily responsible for environmental problems. This is because most environmental issues stem from human activities such as rapid industrialization, which releases harmful pollutants into the air and water. Deforestation, driven by the need for agricultural land, housing, and resources, destroys natural habitats and reduces the Earth's capacity to absorb greenhouse gases. Additionally, excessive consumption patterns, improper waste disposal, and a general lack of environmental awareness among individuals and corporations significantly contribute to pollution, resource depletion, and climate change.

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. It offers numerous benefits to us and the environment.

Firstly, recycling helps to conserve natural resources. By reusing materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal, we reduce the need to extract fresh raw materials from the Earth. For example, recycling paper saves trees, and recycling metal reduces the need for new mining operations.

Secondly, it significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills. Landfills take up valuable space, can pollute soil and groundwater, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling diverts waste, thereby extending the life of existing landfills and minimizing the need for new ones.

Thirdly, recycling saves energy. Producing new products from recycled materials often requires less energy than producing them from virgin materials. For instance, making aluminum cans from recycled aluminum uses about 95% less energy than making them from scratch.

Moreover, recycling helps to reduce pollution. The manufacturing process for new products can release various pollutants into the air and water. By using recycled materials, we lessen the need for energy-intensive manufacturing, which in turn reduces air and water pollution, including greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Finally, recycling also has economic benefits, such as creating jobs in the collection, processing, and manufacturing sectors. It promotes a more sustainable economy and fosters environmental responsibility within communities.

We should stop pollution because it poses a severe threat to human health, the environment, and the overall well-being of our planet. Pollution refers to the introduction of harmful contaminants into the natural environment, which can cause instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to ecosystems and living organisms.

Firstly, pollution severely impacts human health. Air pollution, for instance, leads to respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer. Water pollution causes various waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Soil pollution can contaminate food crops, leading to long-term health issues and nutritional deficiencies.

Secondly, it devastates the natural environment and ecosystems. Air pollution contributes to acid rain, which damages forests and aquatic life. Water pollution kills marine life and destroys coral reefs, disrupting entire aquatic food chains. Land pollution degrades soil quality, making it unsuitable for agriculture and destroying natural habitats for animals and plants, leading to a loss of biodiversity.

Thirdly, pollution contributes to climate change and global warming. The emission of greenhouse gases from industries and vehicles traps heat in the atmosphere, leading to rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, and extreme weather events. These changes have long-term devastating effects on agricultural productivity, sea levels, and natural disasters.

Finally, stopping pollution is crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for upcoming generations. By reducing pollution, we preserve natural resources, maintain ecological balance, and protect the planet's ability to support life. It is our collective responsibility to adopt sustainable practices and make conscious efforts to minimize our environmental footprint.

As a student, you have a significant role in controlling air pollution through various actions. Here are some tasks you can undertake:

  • Promote Public Transport and Cycling: Encourage your family and friends to use public transportation, carpool, walk, or cycle instead of private vehicles. This reduces the emission of harmful gases from cars.
  •
  • Plant Trees: Organize or participate in tree-planting drives in your community, school, or home. Trees act as natural air purifiers by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
  •
  • Conserve Energy: Reduce electricity consumption by switching off lights and fans when not in use, unplugging chargers, and opting for energy-efficient appliances. Most electricity generation relies on burning fossil fuels, which contribute to air pollution.
  •
  • Spread Awareness: Educate your peers, family members, and community about the causes and effects of air pollution and simple ways to mitigate it. You can do this through presentations, posters, or discussions.
  •
  • Proper Waste Management: Advocate for and practice proper waste disposal. Avoid burning garbage, especially plastic and dry leaves, as it releases toxic pollutants into the air. Encourage composting and recycling.
  •
  • Support Eco-friendly Practices: Encourage your school and family to use eco-friendly products and support initiatives that aim to reduce air pollution, such as reducing the use of aerosols or chemicals that harm the atmosphere.
