Should auto-rickshaws be banned from the major roads of Dhaka? Why or why not?

Introduction: In recent years, traffic congestion in Dhaka has become a major issue, prompting some to suggest banning auto-rickshaws from the city's main roads. However, I strongly believe that auto-rickshaws should not be banned. These three-wheelers play a vital role in urban mobility, especially for middle- and lower-income people. Instead of banning them, we should focus on regulation and integration with the broader transport system.

Arguments in Favor of Keeping Auto- Rickshaws: Firstly, auto-rickshaws are an affordable and accessible mode of transport for millions of people in Dhaka, especially the lower and middle-income groups. Many city dwellers depend on them daily due to the lack of adequate public transport options.

* Secondly, their compact size allows them to navigate narrow alleys and congested inner-city areas where buses or private cars cannot reach. This makes them an essential part of the city's transportation network, especially for last-mile connectivity.

* Thirdly, banning auto-rickshaws would directly impact the livelihoods of thousands of drivers and their families. Many of them have no alternative source of income, and such a sudden ban could lead to unemployment, poverty, and increased social unrest.

Arguments Given by Those Who Support the Ban:

Conclusion: While auto-rickshaws do have some drawbacks, banning them completely from major roads is not the solution. Instead, the government should introduce stricter traffic regulations, license monitoring, and route restrictions to ensure smoother traffic flow. Removing them entirely would ignore the socio-economic impact and transportation needs of a large portion of Dhaka's population.
