Read the passage and answer the questions :-

Beauty is easy to appreciate but difficult to define. As we look around, we discover beauty in pleasurable objects and sights- in nature, in the laughter of children, in the kindness of strangers. But asked to define, we run into difficulties. Does beauty have an independent objective identity? Is it universal, or is it dependent on our sense perceptions? Does it lle in the eye of the beholder? We ask ourselves. A further difficulty arises when beauty manifests itself not only by its presence, but by its absence as well, as when we are repulsed by ugliness and desire beauty. But then ugliness has as much a place in our lives as beauty. or may be more as when there is widespread hunger and injustice in a society. Philosophers have told us that beauty is an important part of life, but isn't ugliness a part of life too? And if art has beauty as an important ingredient, can it confine itself only to a projection of beauty? Can art ignore what is not beautiful? Poets and artists have provided an answer by incorporating both into their work. In doing so, they have often tied beauty to truth and justice, so that what is not beautiful assumes a tolerable proportion as something that represents some truth about life. John Keats, the romantic poet, wrote in his celebrated 'Ode on a Grecian Urn', 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty', by which he means that truth, even if it's not pleasant, becomes beautiful at a higher level. Similarly, what is beautiful forever remains true. Another meaning, in the context of the Grecian Urn-an art object-is that truth is a condition of art.

উত্তরঃ When asked to define beauty.
According to the passage, we encounter difficulties primarily when we attempt to define beauty, despite it being easy to appreciate. While we can readily find beauty in nature, the laughter of children, or acts of kindness, articulating a precise definition proves challenging. This difficulty stems from philosophical questions regarding beauty's objective identity, its universality, and whether it lies solely in the perception of the individual. The passage suggests that the complexities inherent in these questions make defining beauty a significant challenge.

Ugliness, like beauty, is a subjective concept and is a natural part of life. It serves as a counterbalance to beauty, helping us appreciate contrasts in the world. Ugliness, whether physical, moral, or emotional, reminds us that life is complex and multifaceted. It challenges our perceptions, encouraging growth, empathy, and resilience. Facing what we perceive as ugly, whether in ourselves, others, or situations, often forces us to confront deeper truths about human nature, social standards, and what it means to be human. It can also serve as a catalyst for change, inspiring creativity, innovation, and new ways of thinking.

উত্তরঃ 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty'

In his renowned poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn," John Keats, a prominent romantic poet, famously penned the line 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty'. This profound statement encapsulates his philosophical view that truth, regardless of its pleasantness, ultimately achieves a beautiful form at a higher conceptual level. Conversely, anything truly beautiful is inherently true and enduring. Within the specific context of the Grecian Urn, an art object, this quote also implies that truth serves as a fundamental condition for the existence and appreciation of art itself.

The passage highlights that ugliness holds a significant, albeit often undesirable, position in human life, existing in a complex relationship with beauty. Its presence is acknowledged as an integral part of our experience, prompting reflection on its nature and implications.

Ugliness occupies a place in our lives primarily in two ways. Firstly, it manifests itself through its absence; when we are repulsed by something ugly, it creates a desire for beauty. This reaction underscores the psychological impact of ugliness, driving our appreciation for its counterpart.

Secondly, and perhaps more profoundly, ugliness occupies a prominent place when societal conditions are dire, such as in instances of widespread hunger and injustice. In such circumstances, the grim realities of suffering and unfairness bring ugliness into sharp focus, often becoming more pervasive and impactful than beauty itself.

Ultimately, the passage suggests that just as beauty is an important part of life, ugliness is equally integral. Philosophers and artists have recognized this, often incorporating both into their work to represent truths about life. Thus, ugliness serves not merely as an opposite to beauty but as a mirror reflecting deeper societal issues and human experiences.

উত্তরঃ

Poets and artists provide an answer by incorporating both beauty and what is not beautiful (ugliness) into their work, often tying beauty to truth and justice.

Poets and artists resolve the dilemma of defining beauty and acknowledging ugliness by integrating both aspects into their creative endeavors. They understand that life encompasses both pleasant and unpleasant realities. By incorporating elements that might be considered ugly, such as injustice or suffering, they demonstrate that these can represent fundamental truths about life. In doing so, they frequently link the concept of beauty to truth and justice. This perspective allows even the unappealing aspects of existence to gain a significant proportion, as they convey a deeper truth. As exemplified by John Keats, who stated, 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,' this means that truth, regardless of its pleasantness, can ascend to a higher form of beauty, and conversely, that which is genuinely beautiful possesses an enduring truth.

Most rivers in our country are in a deplorable condition, with many being polluted, dying, or already dead.

The passage highlights that the rivers in Bangladesh are generally "not in good shape," with several already succumbing to death and others in critical condition. This severe degradation is primarily due to extensive pollution, as exemplified by the Buriganga River. The text points out that huge quantities of toxic chemicals and wastes from various sources such as mills, factories, hospitals, clinics, and households are regularly dumped into the rivers. Specifically, Dhaka city contributes significantly to this pollution by discharging thousands of tons of solid waste and highly toxic tannery waste into the Buriganga daily, transforming it into a dying river characterized by polluted water and a persistent foul smell. This indicates a dire environmental crisis impacting the country's crucial river systems.

The river Buriganga held significant commercial value as it played a crucial role in supporting trade and commerce, particularly during the time when the Mughals founded Jahangirnagar (Dhaka) on its banks.

Historically, the river served as a vital waterway, enabling the transport of goods and people. Its navigability facilitated commercial activities, allowing merchants to move products to and from the region, which was instrumental in establishing Jahangirnagar as a thriving economic center.

উত্তরঃ

The Buriganga is described as a dying river primarily due to severe pollution that has drastically degraded its water quality and ecological health. Its once glorious state has been completely reversed by rampant human activities.

According to the provided passage, the river's water is heavily polluted, and a constant foul smell permeates the air around it. This decline is attributed to the daily dumping of massive quantities of toxic chemicals and wastes from various sources. These include mills, factories, hospitals, clinics, households, and other establishments located in and around Dhaka.

More specifically, the city of Dhaka alone discharges about 4500 tons of solid waste into the Buriganga daily. Furthermore, the Department of the Environment (DOE) reports that 20,000 tons of highly toxic tannery waste are released into the river every day. Experts have identified nine major industrial areas, such as Tongi, Tejgaon, Hazaribagh, Tarabo, Narayanganj, Savar, Gazipur, Dhaka Export Processing Zone and Ghorashal, as primary contributors to this catastrophic pollution, effectively sucking the life out of the river that once supported the capital.

The Mughals marvelled at the tide level of the Buriganga. As an outcome, they founded their capital Jahangirnagar on its banks in 1610.

The Mughals, known for their strategic acumen, were highly impressed by the consistent and significant tide level of the Buriganga River. This natural phenomenon was vital for several reasons: it facilitated easy navigation for large boats, which was crucial for trade and commerce, and it also offered a natural defense mechanism. Recognizing these immense benefits, the Mughals chose the banks of the Buriganga to establish their new capital, Jahangirnagar, in 1610. This strategic decision leveraged the river's resources for transportation, drinking water, and economic activities, contributing significantly to the city's growth and prosperity, eventually leading to its renaming as Dhaka and its development into a heavily populated metropolis.
