Read the passage below and answer questions no. 1:

Meherjan lives in a slum on the Sirajganj Town Protection Embankment. Her polythene roofed shelter looks like a cage. She is nearly 45 but looks more than her age. In front of her shelter, she is trying to make a fire to cook the day's only meal. Her weak hands tremble as she adds some fallen leaves and straw to the fire. The whispering wind from the river Jamuna makes the fire unsteady. The dancing flames remind Meherjan of the turmoil in her life.

Not long ago Meherjan had everything, a family, cultivable land and cattle. The erosion of the Jamuna gradually consumed all her landed property. It finally claimed her only shelter during the last monsoon. It took the river only a day to devour Meher's house, trees. vegetable garden and the bamboo bush. She had a happy family once. Over the years, she lost her husband and her family to diseases that cruel hunger and poverty brought to the family. Now, she is the only one left to live on with the loss and the pain. The greedy Jamuna has shattered her dreams and happiness.

There are thousand others waiting to share the same fate like Meherjan. Bangladesh is a land of rivers, some of whose banks overflow or erode during monsoon. Erosion is a harsh reality, for the people living along the riverbanks. During each monsoon, many more villages are threatened by the mighty rivers like the Jamuna, the Padma and the Meghna. It is estimated that river erosion makes at least 100,000 people homeless every year in Bangladesh. In fact, river erosion is one of the main dangers caused by climate change. If we can't take prompt actions to adapt to climate change, there will be thousands of more Meherjans in our towns arid villages every year.

উত্তরঃ

Many villages in Bangladesh are threatened by erosion because the country is a land of rivers, and during the monsoon season, the banks of its mighty rivers like the Jamuna, the Padma, and the Meghna frequently overflow and erode.

This makes river erosion a harsh reality for people living along the riverbanks, causing thousands to lose their homes annually. The passage also highlights that river erosion is considered one of the main dangers caused by climate change, exacerbating the threat to more villages each year.

The writer personifies the Jamuna as "greedy" to vividly portray its devastating and relentless consumption of land and livelihoods, particularly through river erosion. This metaphorical description highlights the river's destructive nature that takes everything from people without giving anything in return, much like a greedy entity.

In Meherjan's case, the Jamuna's "greed" is evident as it gradually consumed all her cultivable land, her house, trees, vegetable garden, and even her only shelter. The passage explicitly states, "It took the river only a day to devour Meher's house, trees. vegetable garden and the bamboo bush." This act of devouring Meherjan's entire property, which sustained her and her family, illustrates the river's insatiable hunger for land.

Furthermore, the Jamuna's "greed" extends beyond physical possessions; it also "shattered her dreams and happiness." By rendering her homeless and contributing to a life of poverty and disease that ultimately led to the loss of her family, the river has taken away her entire sense of security and well-being. This profound impact on Meherjan's life underscores the severe consequences of the river's destructive power.

The writer also generalizes this "greed" by stating that "There are thousand others waiting to share the same fate like Meherjan" and that river erosion makes at least 100,000 people homeless every year. Thus, the Jamuna is called greedy because its ceaseless erosion acts like an insatiable force, stripping away homes, land, and happiness from countless individuals, making it a powerful symbol of nature's harsh and unforgiving impact on human lives in riverine Bangladesh.
