One day in 1976, Professor Muhammad Yunus (a) visited a poor village near Chittagong University. He (b) met a poor woman who made bamboo stools for a living. Although she (c) worked hard, she (d) remained poor because she (e) was forced to pay a high price for the bamboo. She did not have enough money (f) to buy the bamboo and used to (g) take loans from the moneylenders on an exorbitant interest. Professor Yunus (h) knew that he could not simply (i)give her the money she needed because it (j) would rob the woman of her dignity. Instead, he (k) asked the people in the village how much money they (l) needed to start their own business and free themselves from poverty. He (m) lent the equivalent of about US$27-00 from his pocket to 42 women of the village. Those women (n)set up their small business and started to earn money to support their families.
