Maurya is informed by her daughter Nora that Bartley has made up his mind to visit the Getway fair to sell the horses and earn money. Mourya loses her temper and begs him to change his mind as the storm is sure to come. She gives him another reason that he (Bartley) will be needed greatly when the deadbody of his brother Michael, who was lost in the ocean, is found as there is no man to make the coffin. But Bartley does not listen to his mother and Maurya, the mother of an only son, is afraid of the biggest loss of her life. Ignoring the mother, Bartley leaves for the sail, promising his sister that he will surely come back within four days. On the door step, he looks back at his mother who tells him that her lost son, Michael, also went to the sea leaving his mother behind.
