বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে প্রাচীন সভ্যতা মেসোপটেমীয় সভ্যতা গড়ে উঠে ইউফ্রেটিস ও টাইগ্রিস নদীর তীরে। আবার মেসোপটেমীয় সভ্যতারই চারটি পর্ব ছিল। সেগুলো হলো সুমেরীয় সভ্যতা, ব্যাবলিনীয় সভ্যতা, অ্যাশিরীয় সভ্যতা ও ক্যালডীয় সভ্যতা। মিশরীয় সভ্যতা গড়ে উঠে নীল নদের তীরে।
