GIVEN: A candidate who gets 84% of the votes is elected by a majority of 476 votes. <br/> Let the total number of votes polled be 'x' <br/> Number of votes in favour of the candidate is = 84% of x <br/> = 84x/100 <br/> Number of votes got by the losing candidate = x−84x/100 <br/> = (100x - 84x)/100 = 16x/100 <br/> Number of extra votes in favor of winning candidate = 84x/100−16x/100 <br/> 476 = 68x/100 <br/> x = (476 × 100 )/ 68 <br/> x = 7 × 100 <br/> x = 700 <br/> Hence,the total number of votes polled are 700 .
