ফোর্ট উইলিয়াম কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় ১৮০০ সালের ৪ মে।
তৎকালীন ব্রিটিশ অফিসারদের বাংলা ভাষা শিক্ষা দেয়ার জন্য ১৮০১ সালে কলেজে বাংলা বিভাগ খোলা হয়।
বাংলা বিভাগের অধ্যক্ষ ছিলেন উইলিয়াম কেরি।
