সাফ গেমস এর নাম ২০০৬ সালে এস এ গেমস বা সাউথ এশিয়ান গেমস করা হয়। প্রতি দুই বছর অন্তর সাফ গেমস অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। ১৯৮৪ সালের নেপালের কাঠমুন্ডুতে প্রথম সাফ গেমস অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। ঢাকায় প্রথম সাফ গেমস অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ১৯৮৫ সালে।
