১৯৩০ সালে ফুটবল বিশ্বকাপ শুরু হয়।
ইতালি, সুইডেন, নেদারল্যান্ডস, স্পেন ও উরুগুয়ে প্রতিযোগিতা আয়োজনের ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করে। উরুগুয়ে শেষ পর্যন্ত বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজনের দায়িত্ব লাভ করে। এভাবে ১৯৩০ সালে উরুগুয়েতে প্রথম বিশ্বকাপ প্রতিযোগিতার আয়োজন শুরু হয়।
