ইউনেস্কো সংস্থাটির ৩০তম নির্বাহী পরিষদের ১৬৭তম অধিবেশনে ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ নভেম্বর ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিকে মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে। বিশ্বের ১৮৮টি রাষ্ট্র ২০০০ সালে প্রথমবারের মতো ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে পালন করে। জাতিসংঘ ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয় ৫ ডিসেম্বর ২০০৮।
