প্রসিদ্ধ এই নগরী ইতিহাসে পুণ্ড্রবর্ধন বা পুণ্ড্রনগর নামেও পরিচিত ছিল। এক সময় মহাস্থানগড় বাংলার রাজধানী ছিল। যিশু খ্রিষ্টের জন্মেরও আগে অর্থাৎ প্রায় আড়াই হাজার বছর পূর্বে এখানে সভ্য জনপদ গড়ে উঠেছিল প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক ভাবেই তার প্রমাণ মিলেছে।
