আলো যখন একটি স্বচ্ছ মাধ্যম থেকে অন্য স্বচ্ছ মাধ্যমে তীর্যকভাবে আপতিত হয়, তখন মাধ্যম দুটির বিভেদতত্ত্ব এর গতিপথ পরিবর্তিত হয়। আলোকরশ্মিব এভাবে দিক পরিবর্তন করার ঘটনাই হলো আলোর প্রতিসরণ। যেমন: পানিতে নৌকার বৈঠা বাঁকা দেখা যায়।
