যে সকল শব্দ কোনো noun এর পূর্বে বসে noun এর পরিমাণ, সংখ্যা, নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করে, তাকে Determiner বা নির্দেশক শব্দ বলে।

Determiner এর কোনো নির্দিষ্ট প্রকার নেই তবে, determiner কে তিনটি প্রধান ভাগ করা যেতে পারে:

Countable Determiners: A, An, One, Every, Both, Many, Those, These, Few, A few, The few, Very few, Fewer, Fewest, Many, Many of, A number of etc.

Uncountable Determiners: Little, A The little, Very little, Less, Least, Much, Much of,A bit, Amount of etc.

Mixed Determiners: All, Any, Some, Some of, More, Most, Most of, Rest of, A lot of, Lots of, None of, No, Possessive (your, his, her, their, its), A great deal of etc.

Determiner হলো এমন কিছু শব্দ যা Noun-এর আগে বসে তার নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা, সংখ্যা বা পরিমাণ নির্দেশ করে। ইংরেজি গ্রামারে ডিটারমিনার ব্যবহারের সময় কিছু সাধারণ ভুল হয়, বিশেষ করে Countable এবং Uncountable Noun-এর ক্ষেত্রে। নিচে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সংশোধনগুলো তুলে ধরা হলো:

১. Few এবং Little-এর সঠিক ব্যবহার:

সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয় Few এবং Little-এর প্রয়োগে। মনে রাখতে হবে, Few (Few, A few, The few) ব্যবহৃত হয় Countable Noun-এর সাথে এবং Little (Little, A little, The little) ব্যবহৃত হয় Uncountable Noun-এর সাথে।

• ভুল: There is few water in the glass.

• সঠিক: There is little water in the glass.

• ভুল: I have little friends in this city.

• সঠিক: I have few friends in this city.

২. Many এবং Much-এর পার্থক্য:

সংখ্যা বোঝাতে (Countable) Many এবং পরিমাণ বোঝাতে (Uncountable) Much ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• ভুল: How much students are present today?

• সঠিক: How many students are present today?

• ভুল: I don't have many time to wait.

• সঠিক: I don't have much time to wait.

৩. Number এবং Amount-এর প্রয়োগ:

গণনা করা যায় এমন কিছুর ক্ষেত্রে Number of এবং গণনা করা যায় না এমন কিছুর ক্ষেত্রে Amount of বসে।

• ভুল: A large amount of people gathered there.

• সঠিক: A large number of people gathered there.

• ভুল: A large number of work is still pending.

• সঠিক: A large amount of work is still pending.

৪. Each, Every, Either এবং Neither:

এই ডিটারমিনারগুলো সর্বদা Singular হিসেবে গণ্য হয়। তাই এদের পরে Noun এবং Verb উভয়ই Singular হতে হবে।

• ভুল: Each of the boys have done their work.

• সঠিক: Each of the boys has done his work.

• ভুল: Every students must attend the class.

• সঠিক: Every student must attend the class.

৫. Less এবং Fewer-এর ব্যবহার:

পরিমাণ কমাতে Less এবং সংখ্যা কমাতে Fewer ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• ভুল: No less than twenty students were absent.

• সঠিক: No fewer than twenty students were absent.

৬. Double Determiners এড়িয়ে চলা:

একটি Noun-এর জন্য সাধারণত দুটি ডিটারমিনার পাশাপাশি বসে না (যেমন: Possessive এবং Article একসাথে)।

• ভুল: This is my a book.

• সঠিক: This is my book অথবা This is a book of mine.

• ভুল: The both brothers are doctor.

• সঠিক: Both the brothers are doctors.
