To forgive an injury is often considered to be a sign of weakness; it is really a sign of strength. It is easy to allow one to be carried away by resentment and hate; but it takes a strong character to restrain those natural passions. The man who forgives an injury proves himself to be the superior to the man who wronged him, and puts the wrong-doers to shame. Forgiveness may even turn a foe into a friend. So, mercy is the noblest form of revenge.

Infinitives: To + verb-এর base form অর্থাৎ verb- এর present from- এর পূর্বে- to বসিয়ে infinitive গঠন করা হয়। একে Full Infinitive বলা হয়। Full infinitive-এর to অনুক্ত বা উহ্য থাকলে একে Bare Infinitive বলা হয়। যেমন—

Full Infinitive: They want to play cricket. I told him to do the work.

Bare Infinitive-They can play cricket. I heard him say this.

Infinitive হলো verb-এর একটি Non-finite রূপ যা সাধারণত verb-এর Base form-এর আগে 'To' বসিয়ে গঠিত হয়। এটি বাক্যে একই সাথে verb এবং Noun-এর কাজ করে, তাই একে অনেক সময় 'Noun-verb' বলা হয়।

১. গঠন (Formation):

Structure: To + Base form of verb (V1).
Example: To play, To eat, To read.

২. ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রসমূহ:

ক) বাক্যের Subject হিসেবে:

Example: To tell a lie is a great sin.
Example: To swim is a good exercise.

খ) বাক্যের Object হিসেবে:

Example: I want to go home.
Example: She likes to dance.

গ) উদ্দেশ্য বা কারণ বোঝাতে (Infinitive of Purpose):

Example: He came here to meet me. (সে কেন এল? দেখা করতে)।
Example: We eat to live.

ঘ) Adjective হিসেবে (Noun-কে বিশেষায়িত করতে):

Example: I have no time to waste. (সময়কে বর্ণনা করছে)।
Example: Give me a chair to sit on.

ঙ) Adverb হিসেবে (Adjective-কে বিশেষায়িত করতে):

Example: English is easy to learn.
Example: I am happy to see you.

৩. Bare Infinitive (To ছাড়া Infinitive):

কিছু নির্দিষ্ট verb-এর পর 'To' উজ্জ্ব বা গোপন থাকে। একে Bare Infinitive বলা হয়।

শব্দগুলো: Bid, let, make, need, dare, see, hear, help, watch.
Example: Let him go. (Let him 'to' go হবে না)।
Example: I made him laugh.
Example: I heard him sing.

৪. বিশেষ কিছু ব্যবহার:

Too...to গঠন: He is too weak to walk.
Enough + Infinitive: He is strong enough to carry the bag.
It + Verb... + Infinitive: It is difficult to solve this problem.

৫. Gerund বনাম Infinitive:

অনেক সময় Gerund (verb+ing) এবং Infinitive (to+verb) একে অপরের পরিবর্তে বসতে পারে, কিন্তু অর্থে সামান্য পার্থক্য থাকে।

Gerund: সাধারণত কোনো সাধারণ কাজ বা অভ্যাস বোঝায়। (e.g., I like reading).
Infinitive: নির্দিষ্ট কোনো উদ্দেশ্য বা ভবিষ্যৎ কাজ বোঝায়। (e.g., I like to read this book).

৬. Split Infinitive :

'To' এবং 'verb'-এর মাঝখানে কোনো শব্দ (সাধারণত Adverb) বসানোকে Split Infinitive বলে। আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে এটি প্রচলিত হলেও ফরমাল রাইটিংয়ে এটি এড়িয়ে চলাই ভালো।

Avoid: To quickly finish.
Prefer: To finish quickly.
