"O Mary, go and call the cattle home,
And call the cattle home,
And call the cattle home,
Across the sands of Dee!"
The western wind was wild and dank with foam,
And all alone went she.
The western tide crept up along the sand,
And o'er and o'er the sand,
And round and round the sand,
As far as eye could see.
The rolling mist came down and hid the land
And never home came she.
"Oh! Is it weed, or fish, or floating hair
A tress of golden hair,
A drowned maiden's hair,
Above the nets at sea?
Was never salmon yet that shone so fair
Among the stakes of Dee.
They rowed her in across the rolling foam,
The cruel crawling foam,
The cruel hungry foam,
To her grave beside the sea:
But still the boatmen hear her call the cattle home
Across the sands of Dee.
In the first stanza, the sentence, "and call the cattle home' has been repeated to give us the idea that Mary was frequently told to call the cattle home. In the second stanza, the words 'o'er' and 'round' have been repeated to make us visualize how the tide was coming on the ground slowly and slowly. In the fourth stanza the word 'cruel' has been repeated to express the destructive nature of the sea. The sentence, 'Across the sands of Dee' is used both in the first stanza and in the last stanza to highlight the subject matter of the poem and to maintain the balance of rhythm. (প্রথম স্তবকে, 'আর ডেকে নিয়ে আয় পশুগুলোকে' বাক্যটি পুনরুক্ত হয়েছে আমাদেরকে সেই ধারণা দিতে যে মেরিকে বারবার বলা হচ্ছিল পশুগুলোকে ডেকে আনতে। দ্বিতীয় স্তবকে 'উপরে' ও 'ঘুরে ঘুরে' শব্দগুলো পুনরুক্ত হয়েছে আমাদেরকে মনের চোখ দিয়ে দেখানোর জন্য যে জোয়ার কিভাবে ধীরে ধীরে মাটির উপর আসছিল। চতুর্থ স্তবকে 'নিষ্ঠুর' শব্দটি পুনরুক্ত হয়েছে সাগরের ধ্বংসাত্বক রূপ প্রকাশের জন্য। 'ডী'র বালুচর থেকে' বাক্যটি প্রথম ও শেষ উভয় স্তবকে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে কবিতার বিষয়কে গুরুত্ব আরোপ করতে ও ছন্দের ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখতে।)
