Subject: Causes and effects of road accidents

I received your yesterday. In your letter you mentioned about a road accident that you witnessed. I feel sorry for your condition.

Actually road safety in our country is in a pitiable state. The number of road accidents is increasing day by day. As a result, a number of unnatural deaths take place almost every day and several become physically handicapped or permanently disabled. Most accidents happen due to reckless driving. People in their hurry don't care to follow the traffic signals. The pedestrians tend to cross the roads from anywhere they want and are in turn hit by speeding vehicles. The truck drivers, generally drunk, the young rash scooterists all add to the number of road accidents. A few strict steps like imposing heavy fines and forfeiting the license of the offenders could stop the people from going wild on the road. Authorities need to be more stringent in issuing driving licenses. Constant checking and vigil are required.

I hope the concerned authorities and the general public will see the gravity of the matter and adopt some measures.

Dear Farhan,

Hope, you are safe and sound by the grace of Almighty Allah. I am also well by His blessings. However, you definitely know street accident frequently (ঘন ঘন) occurs in our country. As a result, valuable lives and liabilities are lost. Last week, I have watched a terrible (ভয়ঙ্কর) street accident at the point of Malibag. You might have read it in the newspaper as it was published in the Daily Janakantha the following day. It took place at 4.00 pm. A bus coming from Tongi pushed a rickshaw from behind. Then and there the innocent rickshaw puller stumbled down on the street. The pedestrians (পথচারি) stood around him and got very excited at this. They seized the bus driver and beat him mercilessly (নিষ্ঠুরভাবে). Then the police came to the spot and saved him from public reaction. The police investigated the spot and seized the bus.

I felt very grieved at the unnatural death of the poor fellow. I could not even sleep at that night. Now I feel light informing you of the dreadful accident.

Please be careful while passing through any street.

I received your letter yesterday, I have known that your Annual Examination has ended. Our Test Examination also ended. Some of my classmates have decided to go on a picnic at Rangamati on Friday next. Our Bengali teacher Prof. Kalam Mahmud will also accompany us. On Friday at 7 O'clock in the morning, we shall start for Rangamati from our college by a mini bus. We shall take all necessary food stuff, utensils (সাজ সরঞ্জাম) and musical instruments with us. We shall spend (অতিবাহিত করা) the whole day at the site of the picnic and enjoy ourselves freely. After sun-set we shall come back to Chattogram by the same bus.
