The term "Restoration" refers to both the historical event of 1660, when the British monarchy was restored under King Charles II, and the literary period that spanned from 1660 to 1700. Following the execution of Charles I in 1649 and eleven years of strict Puritan rule under the Commonwealth (led by Oliver Cromwell), Charles II returned from exile in France to claim the English throne.
