The need for a surgical operation, especially an emergency operation, almost always comes as a severe shock to the patient and his family. Despite modern advances, most people still have an irrational fear of hospitals and anaesthetics. Patients do not often believe they really need surgery-cutting into a part of the body as opposed to treatmen with drugs.
Operations are now being carried out that were not even dreamed of fifty years age. The heart can be safely opened and its valves repaired. Clogged blood vessels can be cleaned out, and broken ones mended or replaced. A lung, the whole stomach, or even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient to live a comfortable and satisfactory life.

War is an ancient institution which has existed for at least 6,000 years. It was always wicked and ususlly foolish, but people in the past managed to live with it. Modern ingenuity has changed this. Today either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, unclear and chemical weapons cause the gravest danger. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way.
