Train X leaves New York at 10.00 AM and travels East at a constant speed of x miles per hour. If another Train Y leaves New York at 11.30AM and travels East along the same tracks at speed $\frac{4 x}{3}$ then at what time will Train Y catch Train X?

$= \frac{4 x}{3} - x = \frac{4 x - 3 x}{3} = \frac{x}{3} m p h .$

$X w i l l c o v e r i n (11.30 - 10) = 1.5 h o u r s = (x \times 1.5) m i l e s = 1.5 x m i l e s$

$∴ R e q u i r e d t i m e t a k e n b y Y t o c a t c h X = \frac{1.5 x}{\frac{x}{3}} = 1.5 x \times \frac{3}{x} = 4.5 x h o u r s$

$∴ Y w i l l m e e t X a t = 11.30 a m + 4.5 h o u r = 4 p m$

$A l t e r n a t i v e : G i v e n t h a t,$

$X' s s p e e d i s = x m p h$

$∴ Y' s s p e e d i s = \frac{4 x}{3} m p h$

$L e t, X a n d Y w i l l m e e t a f t e r p h o u r s$

$A c c o r d i n g t o q u e s t i o n s, p x = (p - 1.5) \times \frac{4 x}{3} [A s, d = t i m e \times v e l o c i t y]$

$= p x = \frac{4 p x}{3} - 2 x = \frac{4 p x}{3} - p x = 2 x = \frac{4 p x - 3 p x}{3} = 2 x = p x = 6 x ∴ p = 6 ∴ Y w i l l c a t c h t r a i n X a t = 10 a m + 6 h o u r s = 4 p m (a n s w e r)$
