Lie অর্থ পড়ে থাকা, শুয়ে থাকা। Sentenceটির গঠন অনুসারে শূন্যস্থানে past continuous tense হবে। Verbটির past form হলাে laid আর present participle হলাে lying। সুতরাং শূন্যস্থানে were lying বসবে আর বাক্যটির অর্থ হবে। হারিকেনের পর সমূলে উৎপাটিত গাছগুলাে মাটিতে পড়েছিল।

Past Continuous Tense

অতীতে কোনো কাজ চলছিল, শেষ হয়নি— এরূপ বোঝাতে Past Continuous Tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। তেমনিভাবে অতীতের দুটি সমসাময়িক কাজ when / while দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে when/while যুক্ত অংশটি Past Continuous হয়, অপরটি হয় Past Indefinite, উল্লেখ্য, while-এর পর subject থাকলে এ নিয়ম প্রযোজ্য। (কিন্তু while-এর পর Subject না এসে সরাসরি verb এলে এর সাথে— ing যুক্ত হবে। 

Structure: S + was/were + V1 + ing + ext.

যেমন—

While walking in the garden, he broke his leg.

My uncle arrived while I was watching  TV.
