ইংরেজিতে ২৬ টি বর্ণের মধ্যে A, E, I, O, U বাদে অন্য যে সকল বর্ণ আছে তাদেরকে Consonant বলা হয়ে থাকে। এদের উচ্চারিত হতে Vowel এর সাহায্য দরকার হয়। যেমন 'M' উচ্চারন করার জন্য আমাদের প্রথমে 'E' তারপর 'M' উচ্চারন করতে হয় অর্থাৎ M= E+M হিসাবে উচ্চারন হয়। Consonant বর্ণগুলো হল: B, C, D, F, G, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, S, T, V, X, Z, H, R, W, Y অর্থাৎ ২১ টি।
