Definition of Absolute Phrase
A phrase having a subject but no finite verb and modifying the full sentence is referred to as an Absolute phrase.
Examples of Absolute Phrase
- My cousin finally returning to the homeland, we will be able to have fun in the family gatherings like before.
- The singer’s performance in the concert, the organizers were so happy.
- Jeff is waiting for his friends, having the food cooked in the microwave oven.
- Having the work done early, I decided to go home.
- The concert finished, we all were ready to go the restaurant.
- Being a doctor, you should know it.
Absolute Phrase হলো একগুচ্ছ শব্দ যা পুরো একটি বাক্যকে (Clause) বিশেষায়িত করে। এটি কোনো একটি নির্দিষ্ট শব্দকে মডিফাই না করে বরং পুরো বাক্যের প্রেক্ষাপট বা অবস্থা বর্ণনা করে। একে অনেক সময় Nominative Absolute-ও বলা হয়।
১. গঠন (Structure):
এটি সাধারণত একটি Noun বা Pronoun এবং একটি Participle (Verb-ing বা v3) নিয়ে গঠিত হয়। মাঝেমধ্যে এর সাথে অন্যান্য Modifier-ও যুক্ত থাকতে পারে।
গঠন: Noun/Pronoun + Participle + Optional Modifiers
উদাহরণ: The sun having set, we returned home.
২. মূল বৈশিষ্ট্যসমূহ:
এটি বাক্যের মূল অংশের সাথে কোনো Grammatical সংযোগ (যেমন: Conjunction বা Preposition) ছাড়াই বসে।
এটি বাক্যের মূল অংশ থেকে সাধারণত একটি কমা (,) দ্বারা আলাদা করা থাকে।
এটি কোনো পূর্ণাঙ্গ বাক্য নয় (কারণ এতে কোনো Finite Verb থাকে না)।
এটি বাক্যের শুরুতে, মাঝে বা শেষে বসতে পারে।
৩. বাক্যে ব্যবহারের উদাহরণ:
ক) কারণ বা সময় বোঝাতে:
উদাহরণ: Weather permitting, we will go for a picnic.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে 'Weather permitting' অংশটি পুরো বাক্যের ওপর নির্ভরশীল একটি শর্ত বা অবস্থা বোঝাচ্ছে।
খ) বর্ণনা দিতে:
উদাহরণ: He stood there, his arms folded tightly.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে 'his arms folded tightly' অংশটি তার দাঁড়ানোর অবস্থা বর্ণনা করছে।
গ) কাজ সম্পন্ন হওয়া বোঝাতে:
উদাহরণ: The classes being over, the students left the school.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে ক্লাস শেষ হওয়ার প্রেক্ষাপটটি Absolute Phrase হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
৪. Absolute Phrase বনাম Participle Phrase:
