Prepositional Phrase
দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দ যদি একটিমাত্র Preposition-এর মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় তবে তাকে Prepositional Phrase বলে । অনুরূপভাবে, কোনো Simple Preposition তার পরবর্তী Noun/Noun Phrase সহ Prepositional Phrase গঠন করতে পারে।
He was absent on account of illness.
Raihan stood in front of me.
We were waiting for the bus.
Prepositional Phrase হলো এমন একগুচ্ছ শব্দ যা একটি Preposition দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং সাধারণত একটি Noun বা Pronoun (যাকে Object of the preposition বলা হয়) দিয়ে শেষ হয়। বাক্যে এটি মূলত Adjective অথবা Adverb হিসেবে কাজ করে।
১. গঠন (Structure):
Preposition + Object (Noun/Pronoun) + Modifiers (যদি থাকে)
উদাহরণ: In (Preposition) the room (Object).
উদাহরণ: On the red table.
২. বাক্যে ব্যবহারের ধরন:
ক) Adjective হিসেবে (Adjective Phrase):
যখন এটি কোনো Noun বা Pronoun সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দেয়। এটি সাধারণত সেই Noun-এর ঠিক পরেই বসে।
উদাহরণ: The book on the table is mine.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে 'on the table' অংশটি 'book' (Noun)-কে বর্ণনা করছে।
খ) Adverb হিসেবে (Adverbial Phrase):
যখন এটি কোনো Verb-এর কাজ কখন, কোথায় বা কীভাবে ঘটছে তা বোঝায়।
উদাহরণ: He is sleeping under the tree.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে 'under the tree' অংশটি ঘুমানোর স্থান (Verb-কে বিশেষায়িত) বোঝাচ্ছে।
