Conditional Sentence
প্রধানত If যুক্ত বাক্যকে Conditional Sentence বলা হয়। প্রায় প্রতিটি পরীক্ষায় Conditional Sentence-এর উপস্থিতি লক্ষ্য করার মতো। এটি সাধারণত দুটি অংশে বিভক্ত থাকে : ১. If বাক্যাংশকে বলা হয় If Clause, যাতে একটি শর্ত দেয়া থাকে, ২. Main Clause যাতে উক্ত শর্তের ফলাফল দেয়া থাকায় একে Result Clause ও বলা হয়।
Kinds of Conditionals : অধিকাংশ বইপত্রে তিন ধরনের Conditionals-এর কথা বলা হলেও এরা মূলত ৪ প্রকার।
A. Zero conditional
2. First conditional
3. Second conditional
4. Third conditional
Conditional Sentence বা শর্তযুক্ত বাক্যে সাধারণত দুটি অংশ থাকে— If-clause (শর্ত) এবং Main Clause (ফলাফল)। প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষায় এই দুই অংশের টেন্সের সামঞ্জস্য রক্ষা করা নিয়ে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়। নিচে প্রধান চারটি কন্ডিশনাল এবং সেগুলোর সংশোধনী আলোচনা করা হলো:
১. First Conditional (সম্ভাব্য শর্ত):
ভবিষ্যতে কোনো কাজ হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা থাকলে এই কন্ডিশনাল ব্যবহৃত হয়। এখানে প্রধান ভুলটি হয় 'If' যুক্ত অংশে Future Tense ব্যবহার করা। মনে রাখবেন, 'If' যুক্ত অংশে সর্বদা Present Indefinite হয় এবং পরের অংশে Future Indefinite হয়।
ভুল: If he will come, I will go.
সঠিক: If he comes, I will go.
ভুল: You will fail if you will not study.
সঠিক: You will fail if you do not study.
২. Second Conditional (অসম্ভব বা কাল্পনিক শর্ত):
বর্তমানে কোনো অবাস্তব বা কাল্পনিক পরিস্থিতির ক্ষেত্রে এটি ব্যবহৃত হয়। এক্ষেত্রে 'If' যুক্ত অংশে Past Indefinite এবং Main Clause-এ would/could/might + Verb-এর Base form বসে। সাবজেক্ট যাই হোক না কেন, 'be' ভার্বের ক্ষেত্রে সর্বদা 'were' ব্যবহৃত হয়।
ভুল: If I was a king, I would help the poor.
সঠিক: If I were a king, I would help the poor.
ভুল: If he studied, he will pass.
সঠিক: If he studied, he would pass.
৩. Third Conditional (অতীতের অপূর্ণ শর্ত):
অতীতের কোনো কাজ যা আর পূরণ হওয়া সম্ভব নয়, তা বোঝাতে এটি ব্যবহৃত হয়। এখানে 'If' যুক্ত অংশে Past Perfect (had + v3) এবং অন্য অংশে would have/could have + v3 বসে।
ভুল: If you had worked hard, you would pass the exam.
সঠিক: If you had worked hard, you would have passed the exam.
ভুল: If I had seen him, I told him the news.
সঠিক: If I had seen him, I would have told him the news.
৪. 'Unless' এবং 'In case' সংক্রান্ত সংশোধন:
Unless অর্থ হলো 'If not', তাই 'Unless' যুক্ত অংশে আলাদাভাবে 'not' ব্যবহার করা ব্যাকরণগত ভুল। আবার In case যুক্ত অংশে সাধারণত Future Tense ব্যবহার করা ভুল, এখানে Present Indefinite ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
ভুল: Unless you do not work hard, you will fail.
সঠিক: Unless you work hard, you will fail.
ভুল: I will take an umbrella in case it will rain.
সঠিক: I will take an umbrella in case it rains.
